  • Which GROW3 is right for me?
GROW3 has many options, each designed for different crop types. To help you find the best GROW3 for your growing conditions, we need to answer a few questions to suggest the right GROW3 for your application: · What crop are you growing? (e.g. tomatoes, lettuce, roses) · What stage of growth for this area? (e.g. seedling, rooting, clone, leaf, flowering) · What is the mounting height of the light to the crop canopy? (e.g. 18” ~ 14’0”) · What is the size of the growing area? (e.g. 5,000ft2) With this information, our team can assist you in finding the right solution for your growing area.
  • How many fixtures can connect in one power line?
Depending on the series you are using and the size of the power breaker, the maximum amount is 8-10 lights in one circuit. Some higher-powered GROW3 systems may be limited to only 5-6 per circuit (e.g. 6 x 320W on 20A 120V breaker). Please follow the National Electrical Code or consult an electrician for confirmation of power system.
  • Are GROW3 passively cooled or actively cooled with a fan?
The Grow 3 fixtures are designed to be passively cooled using natural convection without needing a fan, despite a higher ambient temperature. This passive cooling design ensures that the power is used towards light output and growing the plants instead of cooling the lighting system.
  • Does the GROW3 light get hot?
It may feel warm depending on the air temperature and air velocity around the fixture. This is normal, as the fixture housing is designed to draw heat away from the LEDs and drivers. However, as these are high-power lighting systems, we do not recommend handling them while in operation.
  • Does wattage affect plant growth?
Unlike traditional lights, the watts and light output are not the measurements that are solely used to consider the best illumination for the plants. While an average watt per square meter may be able to be calculated, the best method is PPFD, or µmol/m2, and DLI (mol/day). Each plant type requires a different level and kind of light at each growth stage. Too much light and you could ‘burn’ your plant, and too low, the plant will not grow to optimal performance.
  • Do you have PPFD maps?
Yes, PPFD maps are available for our products. Please email us with the specific light fixture that you are looking for. Need help with your greenhouse lighting design? Please contact our horticulture experts at sales@ledsmart.com.
  • What is the highest PPE?
Currently the TopLight RE-H series has the most PPE of any of our products. To be sure this is the right one for you, please contact our sales team at sales@ledsmart.com or call 1-800-457-0416 between 8:30-17:00 PDT.
  • Does the GROW3 light produce heat?
All lighting systems produce heat, but our systems have very little heat. The heat from a light fixture is from poorly designed power supplies and ballasts. Fluorescent and HID light systems traditionally rely on heat transfer by radiation, which generates a great deal of heat to the surrounding environment. Most of a poorly designed product's efficacy is lost through heat from the lamp or the ballast. This poor design feature is compounded by the aluminum reflectors commonly used in these systems, which can substantially impact the temperature at the canopy level. LED Smart’s GROW3 is designed to conduct the heat away from the fixture by conduction and convection. This is why the sides and backs of the GROW3 fixture body may feel warm. However, since convection is carrying the heat away from the fixture from the top of the fixture, your canopy temperature will be minimally impacted in comparison with fluorescent or HID lighting systems.

  • What is PAR, DLI, µmol, PPE, PPFD, and PPF?
PAR: The type of light that a plant can ‘see’ is far greater. How grow lights efficacy and light output is measured is different from traditional light systems. Plant spectrum is often referred to as PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation). The type of light that drives the majority of photosynthesis. The visible light from 400-700nm. Measured in total energy(watts/meter2) PPF: The method of measurement for grow lights is different than regular lights. This number is expressed as PPF (Photosynthetic Photon Flux) or the measurement of the total photons of PAR that is emitted from the light fixture. This is expressed as µmol/s (micromoles per second). This number is the key to measure the overall quality of a grow light. This number helps to compare the efficacy of one grow light to another. PPFD: Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density – how many µmol are delivered. Typically measured in 1 square meter, per second. PPE: PPE (Photosynthetic Photon Efficacy). The measurement of the efficiency of the fixture to convert energy (watts) into light (PPF). This measurement is calculated by the µmol/s divided by the input power (watts). One watt equals one joule per second (J/s). The measurement is expressed as µmol/J That all sounds complicated. However, this is an effective method to compare one type of grow light to another. However, it should not be the sole factor of consideration. DLI: Daily Light Integral is the measurement of the PPFD delivered to an area of 1-meter squared (1M2) over a 24-hour period. Measured within the standard PAR (400-700nm) range only.

  • Is CRI important to the development of my plants?
Used typically for commercial or residential lighting systems, the measure of a light's color rendering index (CRI) is a measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal light source (i.e. the sun). This value is NOT important to how a plant responds or photosynthesizes. Where CRI is important is how well you can tell the true color of something, for example a leaf that might be chlorotic (lacking green). When you have a high CRI it is easier to detect color variations that might be indicating poor plant health. GROW3 with white LEDs has a typical CRI of 85 (out of 100). For comparison, HPS has a CRI of only 25.

The LYNX3 synchronized meter will be supported by SmarTune™ Android version in Q4 2022.
  • What is ‘color ratio’?
In horticulture terms, this traditionally refers to the ratio between blue and red light. Often expressed in terms such as 6:1, or 10:1 (i.e. blue:red) The GROW3 system is capable of more than one color ratio for each light, as each light is customizable to your needs with many having the ability to adjust from 1:1 to 10:1 ratios and everything in between.
  • What color ratio works better for tomatoes?
The SmarTune software comes with several pre-programmed lighting recipes for various types of common plants.
